Maintaining a Healthy Brain

A recent study published in Nature estimates that by 2060 close to a million Americans per year will develop dementia.  This study identified a two-decade window from ages 55 to 75 that they named as a critical time for protecting brain health.  There are a number of things you could be doing to help keep your brain healthy.

Play Brain Games, learn new skills or languages, pick up a new hobby.

Stay Social and active which keeps your brain engaged and improves your quality of life

Exercise isn’t just good for your heart, there are benefits for your brain as well.  Research shows a brisk walk can help lower dementia risk.

These all carry tremendous benefits, but did you know that untreated hearing loss can increase your risk of developing dementia by 500%!?!  Furthermore, the NIH lists hearing loss as the single largest modifiable risk factor for dementia.  This treatment can also help you remain independent and social, adding further support to your brain health.

If you’re over 55, you should have your hearing tested to establish a baseline and develop a follow up plan with your hearing care professional.
