Independence & Hearing
We’ve recently celebrated our country’s independence, and that had me reflecting on one’s personal independence as they age, specifically, my parents. My parents are very active seniors, upon retiring from their professional life, they decided to start raising sheep. I love going to see them and see how happy they are on their little farm, but I worry about what will happen as they age if they lose the independence that brings them so much joy, so I’m determined to fight that as much as I can.
The factor that I have the most control over is their hearing. Most people don’t think about their hearing as it relates to their independence, but the connections are undeniable. A recent study has found that for every 10 decibels of untreated hearing loss, the risk of falls increases 140%! Accidental falls are the number one cause of accidental death among seniors. In addition to death, a third of all seniors that suffer a fall this year will remain at a diminished capacity for an extended period of time.
Hearing loss also has a major impact on cognitive function, perhaps the largest component of maintaining ones independence. Hearing loss frequently leads to social isolation, and limits the stimulation the brain receives. Auditory deprivation is a direct factor in an increased risk of dementia. Patients with even just a mild untreated hearing loss have been found to be twice as likely to experience dementia. Dr. P Murali Doraiswammy, a frequently cited physician from the Duke Institute for Brain Sciences, calls treating hearing loss twice as effective as any cognitive enhancing drugs currently on the market. Bringing the brain “back online” by treating hearing loss has a tremendous impact on ones ability to function at full capacity and maintain their independence.
As my parents age I know there are going to be difficulties, some of which I will be powerless to control. I am fortunate, however, that hearing is a major factor in helping them maintain their freedom, and hearing is my specialty. I have spent the last decade helping people hear better, improve their relationships with friends and family and maintain their independence. If you’re like me and you worry about your parents ability to remain independent, or if you yourself are over 55 and want to stay ahead of any potential difficulty, call today to schedule a comprehensive hearing evaluation.
